Brad Pitt Plays (Green) House

Picture 1No, Brad and Angie aren’t considering putting their ever-growing family in the world’s largest green house. But Pitt, whose dedication to green architecture and disaster relief spawned the organization Make It Right NOLA, put on his hard hat and came up with this green idea.

In an attempt to combat the constant flooding in the Bayou, Pitt and Co. created the floating home, a house that is not only sustainable but practical. Made of polystyrene foam and covered with glass-reinforced concrete, the house features two vertical guideposts that are used as anchors to avoid drifting. If the house needs to make a quick escape, it can shimmy up the guideposts and away. In the process, it will detach from any plumbing or electrical units. And the boathouse is loaded with enough batteries to keep it running for up to three days! Best part: the example home is all ready for a family to move into.

Pitt’s infatuation with the historic city of New Orleans first came while filming the 1994 hit Interview with the Vampire. Since Katrina, he and his partner, UN Ambassador Angelina Jolie, have helped with disaster relief. Pitt once stated that he finds New Orleans to be America’s “most authentic” city.

Pitt is not the only celeb helping out. Ellen DeGeneres, who is a native of New Orleans, has helped to fund over $1 million for Make It Right. The dancing talk show host invites you to donate, too.

Would you want to live in a floating home?

Oscars 2009: Red Carpet Goes Green

See that delicious man standing pretty to the left? That’s Chris Pine. (Anybody else acquire an undying crush while watching him romance Anne Hathaway in Princess Diaries 2? Thought so.)

On Thursday night, Pine and his contemporaries – Neil Patrick Harris, Kate Bosworth, and Gwen Stefani to name a few – walked the green carpet (literally – take a closer look; that faux-grass is a carpet) for the 6th Annual Global Green USA Pre-Oscar bash. The event was hosted by green god Leonardo DiCaprio and featured performances from Mr. Gwen Stefani, Gavin Rossdale, and Sheryl Crow.

Old news. What’s going on tonight? Some have made a stink over the fact that the Academy did not release its customary list of eco-benefactors to the public. Rest assured. According to Tracy Metro, blogstress of Ecorazzi.com, the Oscars are as evergreen. Here are the essentials of her interview with CNN.

The National Resources Defense Council has overseen the entire event, promising us that the Oscars are about as green as it gets. The red carpet was made from recycled bottles and is (of course) reusable. Recyclable bins will be available at every stop and go, just in case a star was feeling like pre-gaming happy hour. Plus, Econation has amped up their eco-friendly drive, Prius, by installing solar panels on the roof.

Celebs are also getting gifted green. The official swag bag being distributed Post-Oscars is a recyclable garment bag, courtesy of Dry Greening. If you can go to Whole Foods with a reusable bag, why not your local dry cleaners? If you weren’t at the Oscars (you too?), try The Green Garmento, a bag that transforms itself from a laundry basket to a garment bag with the flicker of a zipper.

Fun facts: Metro awarded her own Green Oscars. The award for Best Actor went to Ed Bagley, Jr., a veteran who apparently rides his bike everywhere – even to awards shows! Splashing onto the Best Actress scene with her sustainable farm in Colorado would be Daryl Hannah.

For the record, Leo and Cameron D., respectively, get The Green Gamine awards. And if the Oscars had such a thing as a runner up, I’d give it to golden couple Angie and Brad for their serious amounts of activism in Button‘s homestate, Louisianna, and around the world. (If that blissful relationship doesn’t prove that greenness equates to happiness, what does?)

Gotta run. Hugh Jackman is singing again.

P.S. Shout out to Disney’s eco-aware instant classic, Wall-E, for winning Best Animated flick. Cross your fingers for Peter Gabriel‘s “Down to Earth,” the movie’s green anthem. Here’s a clip.
